Ready for eggs

Went to Pet Palace today on Goldsmith and picked up a commercial grade incubator. And this puppy is nice. Digitally temperature controlled. Whisper quiet fan. Water tray for humidity. Blue light for illumination. Front-opening glass door. It even has a handle and DC plug for the car.

And I don't think I could have bought it at a better time. Pandora is plump with eggs. And she didn't eat any crickets today. I read that the first sign of "egg time" is a 2-day lull in eating. Keep your fingers crossed!

Just not in the mood...

What a meh day. Work was tough. Jooj had a rough day. Leading me to have a rough night talking it out with her. Ugh. I'm so miffed at those that will not be named. I'm in such a bad mood that I didn't even have a single bit of desire to play any video games.

(I don't know how well you know me, but after that last sentence you should probably be on the phone with the suicide hotline to see if I've called recently - LOL!)

L'ville Blues - My Fantasy Gambit

Over the past two weeks I've been battling in the semi-finals in Fantasy Basketball. Over the last week of this two week battle I identified deficiencies in my team and made the necessary add/drops to shore up certain weaknesses. I was playing last year's defending champ and over #2 in the league. I have come so close but I fear my gambit wasn't quite enough.

I was down in several categories. I found that I could catch up in steals. So I dropped some players and picked up the best stealers in the league. Then I noticed that I could possibly make a run for blocks. I dropped players and picked up Centers. In two nights I had a healthy lead on blocks. But try as I may, I just can't seem to strike the balance that I'll need to catch him. As I watch, and as the games wind down, I see the two of us switching off field goal percentage.

I have healthy leads on 3-pointers, steals, and blocks. He is destroying me in rebounds, double-doubles, and overall points. We keep trading off field goal percentage. He has an uncomfortable lead in free throw percentage.

Even if I keep my temporary lead in field goal percentage I fear my battle for free throw percentage is lost. I think I overloaded on Centers and it killed my chances over those two nights.

Live and learn. The L'ville Blues will be battling for 3rd starting tomorrow with my eyes on 1st next season!

Fantasies within fantasies and dreams within dreams

Today was a glorious day. Not only did I get to watch a movie with Kelsey (one of our favorite past times back in the day) - at the theater no less - but I also sat down with Jooj for an evening flick. The movie I watched with Kelsey was the newly released Sucker Punch and the movie with Jooj was the award-winning Inception. Talk about a double-whammy mind-flip!

So Sucker Punch cannot be explained easily. It has a fantasy inside a fantasy featuring cute hotties, insane asylums, gargantuan samurai, 'splosions, gatling guns, bazookas, biplanes, automatic weapons, 'splosions, nazis, steampunk zombies, nazi zombies, 'splosions, zeppelins, creepy cooks, bombers, .50 caliber machine guns, castle sieges, knights, orcs, dragons, swords, 'splosions, moons of Saturn, hover trains, robot assassins, 'splosions, sassy nicknames, and lobotomies. It really was a dream for my inner geek. And I wanted to walk out of the theater proclaiming to the world, "This movie was made just for me!" (Much like I did for the personal favorite Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) But while the content was geektastically nergasmic, the story didn't pack a lot of punch. It was eye candy to the extreme but the story was a tad thin. I still enjoyed it. I just wanted it to rock my world and it only mustered a little nudge.

Inception, on the other hand, did rock my world. A dream within a dream. What a fantastic premise. I was on the edge of my seat for most of this one. I don't know what awards it won but it probably deserved more than it got. I highly recommend this one to anyone.

Damn, Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan are definitely on their game at the moment. Funny enough that their next project is working together on Superman: Man of Steel. If these two movies are any indication of what's to come we should be in for a treat (and I'm not that big a fan of Superman).

GO BIG BLUE!

Those UK Wildcats did what few (outside of the state of Kentucky) thought they would and won against the overall #1 seeded team in the NCAA bracket. I was watching it on the laptop last night and couldn't even stay awake for the whole thing. I woke up to a nice surprise!

Oh, and the new oven is coming tomorrow (which is today, btw). Can't wait! What shall we cook and/or bake first?

"The problem with people who have no vices..."

"... is that generally you can be pretty sure they're going to have some pretty annoying virtues. " - Elizabeth Taylor, 1932-2011

Elizabeth Taylor died today. Lexie is home and resting. My ploy to win my playoff game is working, kind of. I picked up a bunch of Centers to boost my blocks. That worked - but at the expense of my shot percentage and free throw percentage. D'oh! Biggest Loser has been extended a week at the request of one of the participants. I have a somewhat comfortable lead so that's fine with me. We won in soccer last night 7-4 in a rather exciting game. Work has been hectic but not crazy like the last few weeks. I'm looking forward to a fish fry on Fryday... har har!

59

Had my heart rate checked today at the health fair at work. I was a tad anxious since my little heart scare last year. The nurse administering the test said, "You much exercise." (I kind really don't) She told me that my heart rate was 59... EXCELLENT!

Well, regardless of whatever does eventually do me in, I don't expect it to come from the ye ol' blood pumpin' muscle :)

Declawlinization

Poor little Lexie is getting her front claws removed tomorrow. Jooj and I have been arguing for the last two years over the fate of her taloned digits. Well, after pricing new blinds and seeing the damage she's done (not to mention the amount of money it will take to replace said damage), I have to concede that I have been wrong. I have not been able to sufficiently curb her clawing behavior.

But it's not the end of her world. The vet will be using their fancy laser device so the procedure and recovery will be sped up and less painful. Plus she will still be living in a very loving home and spoiled rotten. She doesn't need those damn things anyway. The only time she uses them is to attack hair bands/ties and cause problems.

Glutton

I was a busy man yesterday (so busy that I forgot to blog). I followed up my busy Saturday with a pretty hectic Sunday. Gutter cleaning. Leaf raking. Paver laying. There was probably some heavy lifting involved too.

So I didn't really watch my calorie count. And I didn't really watch what I put in my mouth. Breakfast snack. Snack. Lunch. Dessert (did you know if you mixed Chocolate Mousse yogurt with Strawberry Mist yogurt it tastes like Neapolitan Ice Cream [btw, that is a hard word to spell]?). Cereal. Oreos. Nap. Chips. More Oreos. Pistachios. Whew!

There is no doubt about it - I like food. I'm surprised I'm not more of a fatty.

Yet another busy Saturday

Did so many things today. Woke up and pushed Jooj's buttons. Went to my mom and dad's to pick up his pick-up. Picked up Jooj and ran over to Lowe's to look at window treatments. Got in a tiff. Left. Loaded Will's old bedroom furniture in the pick-up. Drove to my sis Melisssss and dropped off that stuff. Took an old tire from them. Came home and loaded up the truck with many hundred pounds of tree stumps. Threw in the two old computers. Drove to the city dump. Gave the man $50. Dropped off the pick-up. Came home. Made up with Jooj. Went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond together. Left empty-handed. Went to Target. Ate some lunch. Went to Home Depot to look at window treatments. Didn't get in a tiff. Bought an oven instead. Came home. Got a text. Went back over to mom and dad's. Went to boss' house with dad. Measured for some stuff. Came home. Assembled a console stand for Will's room. Watched TV. Played some games. Wrote this blog.

By the way, I'm employing some sneaky tactics to beat Eddie in the Fantasy NBA play-offs. Don't tell him I said this but they may be working!

Worst. Picks. EVAR!

I'm pissed. And I'm not.

I threw down some cash to participate in my work's NCAA Random Pick Pool. The rules are simple. You get 4 random teams. You get points for how far each team goes. In the end, the person with the most points wins.

They did it last year and it seemed fun. I remember they had to redraw and inject the rule that each person is guaranteed a top 4 pick. So my random picks are...

BYU, Marquette, Hampton, and UTSA / Alabama St.

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot?!?

So I got #3, #11, #16, and #16? And the #3 lost their best player 'cause he slept around with a grrrl before the tournament? I should cry foul but I guess that's what the word "random" means.

If I don't score the lowest points possible I'll be penultimately surprised.

Things I should mention...

1. Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone!

2. The L'ville Blues made it to the play-offs! I'm a 3 seed playing the 2 seed over the next two weeks. Not bad for a guy who pretty much knows next to nothing about the NBA.

3. Nate Dogg died. As a former fan of hip-hop that makes me very sad. He was too young. Although, if he lived by his mantra of "smoke weed everyday", maybe he had it coming. Still, I'll miss his vocals.

4. As if the nearly-9 scaled earthquake and 30 foot tsunami wasn't giving Japan enough trouble, several nuclear plants are having issues - one having severe issues with 4 of its 5 reactors. It's chilling to think what may come.

5. Those damn Cards lost to Morehead State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Totally lame!

6. Both the cats, Tobias and Lexington, have been sick. I think they are coming around but good gawd I'm tired of illness - even when it isn't mine.

7. Speaking of pets, Pandora just *may* be preggers again. She's eating everything she can get her mouth on and is blowing up!

Battlefront 3

E3 is approaching (in June) and the rumors are flying that Star Wars: Battlefront 3 is under development by someone, somewhere. I swear, at this point I shouldn't care. How long have I been teased by rumors like this? Six years? Seven?

It's either being developed by Crytek UK (doubt it - they are probably working on TimeSplitters 4) or Spark Unlimited (I kind of hope not since their game offerings haven't seemed too spectacular) or it's not being developed. At this point I don't care. In fact, by the time it makes it to shelves (assuming it is under development right now) Will and I won't have much time to play together... the boy is growing up.

Damn, I'm a day behind again. St. Patty greetings up next.

I'm back ya'll

And that's a fact ya'll
And if you're messing with me
You're getting jacked, ya'll

(That sounds a lot better in my head than it reads)

I played soccer last night after a four-week layover (2 BYEs and 2 sick). It felt great. Sure, I'm paying for it now. My right calf feels on the verge of a cramp. My left elbow was stepped on. I took a shot that glanced off my left eye socket. My right elbow is scabbed. My knees are raw. Fun, right?

The game started off with two quick goals against us, 0-2. Before too long we found ourselves down 1-4. Shortly after halftime we had pulled to 4-6 but then they scored a quick goal to make it 4-7. We actually managed to tie the game up with 90 seconds left. And then, by some miracle, we scored again with only 20 seconds to go. After defending for a frantic 15 seconds we won, 8-7.

Edgar, my main Mexican was back. I haven't seen him or played with him in years. It felt good. So with Ahmed and Edgar back with me I really feel well protected. If we could convince Tony to come back... oh man, I'd have my Arabian, my Mexican, and my Italian. We'd be right as rain.

Rear Ended at DQ

Some dumbass rear-ended us while at the drive-in window at DQ yesterday. Jooj and Will and I were waiting on our frozen tasty treats when it happened. There was no damage to his bumper and only a smudge on my back spare tire so we didn't have to involve the authorities. But can you believe that? As the wise Bugs Bunny once said, "Eh, what a maroon!"

Now that I think about it, my neck is a little stiff.

"Doctor says I need a back-y-otomy!"

Hahaha!

BTW, finally back on track with the blogs. I was getting bad about missing days. Too much crack* (but the time-change and lingering illness hasn't helped).

New Socket Wrench and Bow Saw (400th post!!!)

My old socket wrench went with the Jeep. The hand saw of Jooj's has been around in her life longer than I have (and helped take down a tree among other things) so it was time for a replacement. I headed over to Lowe's and picked up a handy little bow saw. After perusing the 227-piece, 129-piece, 40-piece, 24-piece, 20-piece, I-don't-care-how-many-pieces-piece sets I just snatched a socket wrench and the 1/2" socket I needed.

Why devote a blog entry to the tools I bought? Well, I'll tell you why (soapbox time).

What are we without our tools? I mean, I know we have opposable thumbs and self-awareness, but what can that really get us in the long-run. We as humans have done some cool things: fire, the wheel, industrialism, the internal combustion engine, the silicon microchip, mini-skirts. But what are all of these things? That's right. Tools. They are all tools. They are just different tools that we put into the tool belt of the human race.

(Steps off of soapbox.)

So yeah, I picked up some new tools.

Time change... ugh

I'm going to try and not dwell on this. NFL players... really? C'mon!

Last night was Jooj's Aunt Janice's early St. Patrick's Day party. She had corned beef and cabbage and yummy shepherd's pie. I can honestly say I've never had either of those meals homemade before. Obviously I have zero Irish blood in me.

We came home and I watched those silly Cards lose the Big East tournament. Man, it was a tight game. They just couldn't pull it out in the end. I expect them to go deep into the tournament.

Then I turned to my crack* and started a new game up. I was rolling right along and, after what seemed to me to be about an hour, I looked at the clock and it read 3:40am. Are you kidding me? I'm such an addict!

Well, yes and no. I shut things down (forgetting to blog in the process) and rushed off to bed. As I snuggled into the blankets I looked at the clock (the one *not* automatically updated by the Internet or computer), and realized it was actually 2:40am... we had just lost that hour to the time change.

TGIF... unless you live in Japan

Woke up this morning to the news that Japan was hit with an 8.9 scale earthquake. That's, like, earth-rending. Of course they wer nailed with a tsunami shortly thereafter. Cars and boats and debris covered the landscape - up to three miles inland. That's insane. The spookiest bit of video I saw was a tsunami lurching its way across the countryside whilst a raging fire burned right on top of it. I don't even know how to fathom that. If you don't get crushed by the debris or drown in the water... what, the fire is going to get you? That's just too many elements assaulting you at once!

Anyway, glad it's Friday. I need some rest.

My new crack*

City of Heroes has been my crack* for nearly three years. Sure, I've sampled other crack* along the way. Sins of a Solar Empire was my crack* for a while. Spore was my crack* for a while after that. GalCiv 2 was my crack* for a long time before City of Heroes and it was good crack*. And Warlords IV was my super crack* before all of that - and one which I still partake in from time to time. Masters of Orion 2 was some of the longest and oldest crack* which predated all of them. But move over old cracks*, I've found something crackier!

Elemental: War of Magic is the new crack*. You see, I'm a sucker for turn-based strategies. MOO2, Warlords IV, and GalCiv 2 were all turn-based - and they were crackilicious. Sins was a hybrid between turn-based and real-time strategy, so it was pretty crack-a-lackin'. But Elemental takes turn-based and mixes it with fantasy - much like my beloved Warlords IV - but adds tactical combat and a ton more depth. I have only started this new crack* but can tell that I'm going to be hooked for a long while.

* "Crack" refers to my video game of choice. What do you think I am? Some kind of dope fiend? Sheesh!

12 hours

Why didn't I blog yesterday?

Short answer: esophagus magma. Long answer:

I came home, ate dinner, hung out with the fam for a few minutes, and fell asleep at about 6:30pm. Besides waking up to take the dogs out or having unintelligible conversations after being roused, I slept straight through until about 6:30am this morning. That's right - 12 hours of sleep.

Suffice to say, the night before last did not go well. I settled down finally around 1:30am. I shot up with searing gut pain at 3:15am. I ate Tums like I was at the movies and they were the popcorn. I fell asleep, sitting upright on the couch, sometime after 4:15am (much faster than the over 2 hours it took over the weekend). And I woke up at 6:30am. I was more than beat. I was destroyed. But yesterday was a big, big day at work so I rode that adrenaline wave until I came home and crashed.

46" OF GOODNESS

I went to Sam's today and purchased my second 23" monitor. Now I have it lined up next to the other 23" monitor...

And.

They.

Look.

GLORIOUS!!!

Will's reaction, after walking into the office, was somewhere between shocked chortle and gasped guffaw. It is truly a sight to behold.

Also, and actually more importantly, we made another significant payment to the Visa. Just a few hundred to go and that sucker is paid off.

On the most penultimately important note, the MasterCard now carries a $0 balance. Paying debt off is boring, I know, but seeing that zero feels so damn sexy!

A lot of things can happen in a day

My day started at 3:15 AM. I woke up to a burning gut. I had taken a Protonix (magical stomach medicine from heaven) before I went to bed because I knew something was up with my belly. I woke up Jooj when I took another Protonix and chowed down 4 Tums. An hour later I threw down 4 more Tums. Relief was not happening. I started to freak out. I thought I was going to have to call an ambulance. Pain eventually subsided. I remember seeing 5:34 AM on the clock before fading out.

Today was the last day of the Louisville Arcade Expo. It was a collection of coin-op arcade games, old systems, and new systems. It was at the Holiday Inn by the house. And it was $12 for all-day free-play. My most fondest memories involved the arcade - whether it was dad taking me to Malibu or Granny taking me to Chuck E. Cheese. Unfortunately, because of the belly burn from the night before and because I couldn't get anyone to join me, I skipped out.

I checked on the bearded dragon eggs this morning. DISASTER! They were covered in mold. OH NOES!!! After some quick research we found that, even if the eggs were viable, they were goners now. I was sad but quickly resigned to the fact that this clutch was doomed from the beginning. Next time, a professional incubator will be employed.

A little later in the day Jooj checked and we found that Kels has been awarded a first round of financial aid from Murray. It's no full ride but it ain't pennies either. Yay!

Lastly, I rearranged my desk after adding my new 23" screen. Jooj commented that another one would look good next to it. Indeed it would, Jooj. Indeed it would!

The day...

... I will never forget.

Mom revealed the reason she was acting weird. She gave us "early inheritance" money. It was nice seeing all those zeroes on that check.

It may sound boring but we used 90% of it to pay off bills. The other 10% went towards regular errand running - plus a little something special for me and a little something special for Jooj.

Thanks ex-Mayor Abrahamson for not paying the firefighters like you should have 7 years ago. Cha-ching!

Keg Party!

I hosted a keg party at work today - a keg of Newcastle no less.

However, the keg was actually a mini-keg, only 5 liters. And I served it out of dixie cups - hahaha! Mike put on some music from his tiny speakers. I said next time we should serve very tiny hors d'Ĺ“uvres. Someone else suggested a tiny disco ball.

However, right as I was hitting my 8th beer (a dixie cup held about 2 drinks or one gulp of beer) I was summoned to resolve a work issue. No rest for the wicked!

Wednesday Double Feature

Jooj and I spent our last sick day watching a couple of movies. We watched How to Train Your Dragon in the morning. It is an animated feature from Dreamworks about Vikings and dragons. It was cute and entertaining. It's not the same caliber as Up or the Toy Story series but it was very good. I certainly recommend it and look forward to watching it again sometime.

We watched Defendor in the afternoon. I've seen it before but Kels wanted Jooj to see it. It is a quirky film about a low intelligence guy who plays vigilante in an effort to make sense of the world around him. I didn't like it as much the first time I saw it as this time. Jooj liked it. It's a unique little film that isn't for everyone but is pretty cool.

Tuesday Triple Feature

Today I spent the day nursing myself back to health. And what better way to pass the time than to watch some movies. One movie led to the next and, before I knew it, I had three movies under my belt.

Iron Man 2 started the afternoon off. It wasn't as good as the first but it captured some of the heart. Robert Downey Jr. killed in it again. Don Cheadle stepped in and I didn't miss Terrence Howard. I could have done without Scarlett Johansen. She's never done it for me. It was dumb fun - nothing too difficult to digest.

Kick-Ass was next on the list. And it has been near the top of my list for some time. I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to enjoy this flick but enjoy I did. It's a funny little tale about a kid who decides he wants to don a mask and kick some ass - or get his ass kicked mostly, as it turns out. Chloe Moretz stole the show as Hit Girl. The movie was good but she turned it up to great. I don't know, there is just something about an 11-year old assassin chick that tickles my funny bone. I recommend it - but I'd only recommend it to a select few. It's violence and humor isn't for many. But those who would like it will LOVE it.

RockNRolla rounded out the night. I'm a big Guy Ritchie fan. And I like British gangster flicks. I loved Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and I loved Snatch. So I knew I'd like this one. It started heavy with introductions but I had faith that every plotline was heading towards a collision course. It had some gags, some great lines, and totally delivered on one helluva ending. I recommend it to anyone who likes Guy Ritchie. You know what you're getting into with his movies... and they don't let down.
